About the course

DEEP’s Submersible Search and Rescue course provides essential knowledge and practical skills for responding to manned submersible emergencies.

Conducted in a controlled body of freshwater at DEEP Campus in the UK, the course builds core competencies in acoustic tracking, underwater communications, buoyancy control and coordinated rescue operations. Participants work directly with a crewed acrylic-sphere submersible to apply recognized SubSAR frameworks and Crew Resource Management (CRM) in realistic entanglement, recovery, and rescue scenarios.

Who is this course for?

  • Individuals who own, charter, or regularly operate manned submersibles for personal exploration, research, or leisure.
  • Expedition cruise operators using manned submersibles in polar and remote regions.
  • Operators of tourist submersibles.
  • Research institutions deploying submersibles from dedicated research vessels.
  • Organisations providing operational management, crewing, and safety oversight for submersible operators on behalf of owners or charterers.
  • Naval and government units operating manned submersibles for research, testing, or specialist missions.

What you'll learn

  • Gain an understanding of international SubSAR frameworks and operational concepts, including SHP and OHP.
  • Conduct a SubSAR mission including planning, briefing, hazard assessment, environmental evaluation, execution, and recovery.
  • Identify and assess operational and environmental risks in sub rescue operations.
  • Troubleshoot submersible tracking and communication systems (Sonar, USBL, surface comms).
  • Complete a standardised international situation report (SITREP).
  • Operate and interpret USBL for asset or hazard location, tracking, and deployment of rescue equipment.
  • Apply search patterns, including expanding square, contour, and parallel track.
  • Crew Resource Management (CRM) behaviours and sub roles.
  • Effective rescue equipment deployment and connection to a distressed submersible.
