The ocean stores ~40 teratonnes (95 %) of the carbon in the planet’s active carbon cycle. However, due to climate change induced by anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, the ocean is becoming a less effective store and more carbon is ending up being stored in the atmosphere.
