Preparing for the demands of spaceflight

Human spaceflight is expanding in scope, complexity, and duration. It’s also including a broader range of personnel. This is placing greater demands on spaceflight readiness training and screening.

But integrated analog environments that can replicate the operational, physiological, psychological, and cognitive demands of spaceflight are rare. Rarer still, are those that can also support mission-relevant research, technology development, and payload activities alongside readiness training.

That’s why DEEP’s subsea human habitats, facilities, and instructors create a powerful platform to prepare for spaceflight.

Why subsea missions?

  1. Isolated, confined, and extreme

Operate in an environment where failure has real consequences. Teams develop the judgment, communication discipline, risk awareness, behaviors, and mindset needed for spaceflight.

  2. High fidelity, multi-domain

Spaceflight-like procedures, timelines, communications, physiological and psychological stressors, and scientific research operations combine in a single program. While other environments can provide some of these conditions, the subsea environment offers them all in one integrated mission.

  3. Proven environment

NASA assessed subsea habitat missions as the highest fidelity terrestrial analog for behavioral health and performance, and a near-equivalent to ISS missions.* NASA has used saturation missions for preflight training for over a decade, focusing on operations training, crew development, procedure evaluation, technology testing, and human performance and biomedical research.

Vanguard

Spaceflight readiness missions take place from Vanguard, our pilot habitat on the seabed at Tennessee Reef in the Florida Keys.

Vanguard is a new-generation underwater habitat, and the first to engage with DNV, a global leader in maritime classification, under its ruleset for live-in habitats.

DEEP Station Florida

Our shore base in Marathon, Florida, is a short transit from Vanguard. It serves as our integrated operations, aquanaut training, and mission-control facility. The site includes a real-time habitat watch desk, emergency response capabilities, and classroom space. It also serves as a logistics hub for client payloads.
